The Orange Media Network (OMN) Visual Media Adviser (Adviser) works within the Experiential Learning & Activities (ELA) organization.
The Adviser will advise, guide, train, and provide feedback to students creating visual media across all media platforms at Orange Media Network (OMN), the student media organization at Oregon State University.
At OMN, we strive to lead the field of college media by elevating diverse student voices through innovative, accessible hands-on media and leadership experiences that challenge views, engage the community and celebrate resilience.
The Adviser operates from an equity lens, prioritizing equity in the workplace and when working with the OSU community.
They create an environment that leverages the strengths of student staff, promotes synergy and teamwork, empowers the students, and challenges all team members to learn and grow.
The Adviser serves as a subject matter expert on visual media.
This position requires a dynamic, responsive, caring leader capable of prioritizing tasks, adapting to changes, working independently, and supporting the needs of students without taking away their autonomy and decision-making abilities.

edu/benefits/new-employees/benefits-calculator Position Duties 65% ADVISING, PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT, AND ASSESSMENT Serve as the primary adviser to Prism Art & Literary Journal, OMN Photography Team, OMN Creative Design team and associated websites Supervise and direct the on-boarding process for new staff and leaders within Prism, Photography Team, and OMN Creative Design Team Develop, plan, execute, and evaluate a comprehensive fall training program and continuous learning plan for the -student staff team, including:
Positively and proactively contributing to the educational and professional development of student staff in media, wellbeing, leadership, DEI and future readiness Training and assisting OMN students across all mediums in visual storytelling Coordinating with the Orange Media Network Leadership Team for student training in professional journalism standards, ethics and laws including accuracy, interviewing, editing, libel, obscenity, and invasion of privacy, page design and production, SEO, social media engagement and audience growth, interactive graphics, data visualization, google tools, trademark, copyright infringement, and plagiarism.
Hold regular, standardized and publicized trainings Coordinate guest speakers and be available to host guests Provide timely, in-person and written critiques of student produced content, with tools and recommendations for improvement.
Ensure students follow the SPJ Code of Ethics and the College Media Association Code of Ethics and other standards of professional journalism and fiscal best practices.
Advise student leaders and staff while respecting and maintaining student content control Holds student staff accountable for meeting deadlines and goal setting Track and coach students to successfully grow audience engagement with OMN media Coordinate full cycle assessment, evaluation and strategic planning efforts for student teams (e.
g.
participation, learning outcomes, program objectives, impact and inquiry) inclusive of written assessment & outcome plans Work with students to develop annual budgets and activity plans for their teams and monitor approved budget and expenses to ensure students stay within or under budget Assist students and clerical staff in selecting and managing contest entry selection, submission and awards records.
25% LEADERSHIP Serve on the Orange Media Network Leadership Team to spearhead and collaborate on strategic initiatives tied to OMN, ELA and SEE mission, vision and strategic plan.
Assist in creation of long-term strategies, goals, staffing plans, and funding for OMN and ELA.
Generate new ideas and strategies to improve your programs.
Engage in proactive and ongoing professional development on industry trends and execute these new strategies with students.
Implement new engaging and relevant storytelling formats, including data visualization and interactive graphics.
Serve as subject matter expert on visual storytelling and visual media creation Track and report budgetary needs and issues to the Leadership Team and related budgeting boards.
Assist with the student fee process.
Integrate equity, inclusion, belonging, and access practices into OMN training, events & programs.
Work collaboratively and build reciprocal relationships with university colleagues, student organizations and community leaders to share information and develop new opportunities to enhance content and expand the delivery of programs, services, and resources to all students.
Be an active member of SPJ, CMA, ACP, ONA, ONPA.
10% ADDITIONAL DUTIES Represent SEE/ELA/OMN in communications, presentations, and campus involvement Participate in and/or lead divisional level initiatives as requested by leadership Participate in department/division activities including meetings, retreats, and staff development Participate on or chair committees, task forces, and special projects as a representative for ELA/SEE as requested by leadership Other duties as assigned Minimum/Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in journalism, mass communications, or other fields relevant to position duties.

years of full-time, professional media experience creating content for magazines, newspapers, or websites Demonstrated experience using newsroom-related design and photo software.

Demonstrated ability to work independently, using initiative and judgment, in a fast-paced environment Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills Demonstrated experience in producing content in modern multimedia platforms.

A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq.

Preferred (Special) Qualifications 5
years of full-time, professional journalism experience in any combination of:
newspaper, magazine, online and long-form radio and long-form TV.
Demonstrated experience packaging multiple media formats for effective story telling.
Demonstrated experience in any combination of the following:

Working Conditions / Work Schedule Travel to and from meeting & event venues is required.
This position works in a work area that may include frequent interruptions and activity.
Often lift or carry objects weighing up to 30 pounds and pushing or pulling carts weighing up to 30 pounds.
Must be able to work at a computer for long periods of time.
Evening hours required.
Occasional weekend duties.
